Where does your money actually go? Start with one month
Before budgets or goals can work, you need the raw truth. Here's how one honest month of tracking changes every decision after it.
Ask most people what they spent last month and they'll name rent and groceries, then trail off. The money that actually decides whether a month works — the small repeated spending across categories — is invisible to them. That invisibility is the problem everything else depends on.
One month, recorded honestly
You don't need to change anything in your first month. The assignment is only to record it: every income, every expense, split into categories. In Moneybag AI that means adding your accounts once (bank, cash, wallet, card) and logging transactions as they happen — ten seconds each.
The goal is a complete picture, not a perfect one. If you miss a coffee here or there, fine. But don't skip entries because they embarrass you — those are exactly the rows the future version of you needs to see.
What the reports will tell you
- Which two or three categories quietly dominate your spending
- How much of your income survives the month as net savings
- Whether subscriptions and recurring charges match what you actually use
- Which account your money really flows through most
Once you can see those numbers, budgeting stops being guesswork. You set limits where the data says the pressure is — not where a template guesses it might be.
Then build on top
After one honest month you have everything needed for step two: per-category monthly budgets, recurring rules for the fixed stuff, maybe a savings goal with a deadline. Track first, optimize second — in that order.
